Never had to remove the seat from my 1975 R75/6. I can't figure out how to slide it off the hinge pins. What's the trick?

There may be a clip that holds the rear hinge from moving backwards off the pin or, if the pins are pointed at each other, you will have to remove two of the screws holding the rear hinge to the seat and pivot it out of the way. I find it helps to wiggle the front hinge off the frame first and then pivot/twist the rear hinge off the frame tube.

OK, thanks. I thought there was a way short of taking the hinge off.

Once you have it off, go to Duane's site and check the page on the /6 lift-off seat mod. With the mod, you can access the under-seat tool tray without removing the right pannier. You'll never go back to the hinges. Plus, it makes battery removal unbelievably easy.

On a related matter, has anyone with a /7 or later (up to monoshock) tried this mod? My 1982 R100 had a previous owner who modified a monoshock seat so I can't find out on my own bike but I'd like to get a seat that lets me lift it off. I'm reluctant to buy a new seat for fear of isn't possible. (I'm trying to avoid expensive educations)

I have the lift-off kit on my /7...have had it since I first got the bike back in the early 1980s. At the time, there was a kit sold by someone...can't remember who. Duane shows the essence of the kit on his website.

Further to my last post. I bought a replica RS 3/4 seat from der Fatherland, and screwed an M6 bolt into the rearmost of the 3 front hinge mounting holes. It lines up PERFECTLY with the hole in the cross member - abeam of, and slightly behind the seat locking pin. Since I already have a few inches of surplus fuel line, my lift-off kit cost me about 50 cents! (I said what the hell, and popped for a new M6 bolt.)

I am pleased to see the lift off mod being used. I can't imagine why anyone would use it and then go back to those hinges.

Somebody sold a small kit back in about 1975. We saw what it was and realized just how simple it is to make it up from nothing.
