Timing Mark

On a /2 twin, should the timing mark be in the center of the hole? Mine appears to be a good bit above center. It looks like a saw cut on the left (forward) side of the hole. Is this likely original, or has someone modified the original position?

What model bike? Which mark, OT, static, or full advance? I've only seen them midway on the edge of the flywheel, between the front and back edges.

Have you confirmed the marks on the flywheel by using a degree wheel? Pretty simple to do. I just did it on my R25/2 which only has the OT mark...I had to put the static and full advance marks myself.

The mark (any) should line up with the mark on the case. The case mark is towards the front. In reality, it matters none, as that accuracy just isn't needed.

Besides, the timing mark is just a place to start.
