Voltmeter/Brake Lights??

My 88 R-100RS has developed a "new" issue. When I apply either the front OR rear brake and the brake light switch is making contact, my voltmeter pegs to the far left and the brake light more often than not will not illuminate. Brake light bulb is good. I suspect a common ground point, but I know BMW uses common "crimp" points for multiple circuits, special diodes in the relays....... Anyone have any suggestions?? Thanks!!
