Yeah, I feel like I lucked out a bit. In forgetting to order/install new rim strips, I had one fail at 70 MPH on I-5 in Seattle. I think the tube went from inflated to flat in about a minute, which was an interesting/terrifying experience in and of itself. I limped off an onramp and to a gas station...

Re: Help - 1971 R/50 Barnfind
Yeah, I found that when I lacked confidence in what I was doing, I would buy parts from BMW Hucky and use it as an excuse to bother him for advice. He was also really helpful in identifying some random aftermarket parts that came with the bike. Max BMW and Capitol Cycles got my orders for random doo...

Are these still available?
My ~500 mile shakedown ride on the 71 R50/5 has gone reasonably well. The only issues that I see are that I need new rim strips (I forgot when I changed the tires/tubes, and the originals are pretty shot), and that I have one push rod seal that's started to slowly leak.

Yeah, I don't think diesel pumps/injectors do well with gasoline. I haven't dealt with this since the proliferation of ethanol, so God knows what that would add to the equation.

You're excluding yourself from that definition of Airhead...Rob wrote: Hey Duane, there is a new guy with a R50/5 that wishes he had BMW's dual disc brakes. You might want to set him straight.

That's not a bad looking bike at all! I'd hang onto it and keep it in the family.

A tip for painting fenders:
The fenders will sit securely over the cheapest plastic saw horses available at Harbor Freight.
Once you're done painting, they'll actually look better (they being the saw horses).
