BMW-Specific Specialty Tools for Crank Shaft Job

Looking to replace the crankshaft on a 1980 r100t soon-ish. Am looking to see if anyone has the tools necessary to do this job. Specifically anything related to this job, and specific to BMW's or like, the crank itself or whathaveyou. Also incidentally looking for a crankshaft, but that might be a b...

Rear Trunk/Top Case Alternatives - R1100RT

Hey all! I have a 99 R1100RT with I believe factory stock side bags and a top case. They are decently sized for day-to-day use, but I am fixing to do a longer journey through another part of the country where at least a few days in a row, I'll only have the bike for storage of luggage/clothing/souve...

On the Hunt for a Crankshaft

Last summer y’all helped me stumble through rebuilding the top-end after I stupidly spun a bearing. It worked, sort of, in that I got the bike back together and running, but the damage was done and the knock persisted. I have a question. Two, actually. 1. Does this crank look okay? There’s a … gash(...

Re: Parts sourcing - Top-End Rebuild?

Common failure, bintheredunthat. what typically is the cause? As far as your other bike's crankshaft goes, my main regret was to advise you to keep trying after you used 220 grit on it instead of 600. The 220 grit deeply scored it and removed way too much material. That's when we shoulda called it ...

new tail lights look slick. Also, TIL there's a tool to assist in tightening a zip tie that isn't just a pair of needle-nose pliers.

Re: Parts sourcing - Top-End Rebuild?

Also, in semi-related news, my brother, an automotive mechanic by trade (or, well, formerly. Still the best mechanic in the family) had so much fun helping and watching me work on my bike that he went and bought an '02 1150RT. With no compression in 1 cylinder. I hate oilheads. Airheads rule! none ...

Re: Where to Source Used Crank?

I don't want to add to your woes but, as you now have to do a complete stripdown, make sure you check the oil pump, the pressure relief valve and the oil filter bypass valve. Something caused that crank to fail in the first place and lubrication failure is a good possibility. Rob The problem, as fa...

Wow. That’s quite the range. Good to know.

Where to Source Used Crank?

1980 R100T Last thread was a doozie, so I'm starting fresh. All in all, we determined through much effort that the crankshaft in my r100t is needing to be replaced. only one I can find is on eBay for $400, and I know that I've seen better prices. Is it just a waiting game? Are there other options in...
