Re: center stand springs
NOW...I have mine safety wired where they connect to the frame at the swingarm. Lost too many to count. Wrong spring, OEM spring...they ALL jump off. Some of my OEM springs snapped just at the hook where they go onto the center stand. they can snap over time (usually at the tabs on the center stand...

Re: /5 instrument rebuilders
Palo Alto did mine about 10 years ago. It came out beautiful. Needles are starting to curve up again. Original mileage maintained. my only complaint is that the lighting somehow changed. When riding at night now, I can barely see the tach or speedo. Palo Alto swears they changed nothing and I'm usin...

Re: New 8 tooth starter
I've had one on my R90s for about three years now. Best money ever spent getting rid of that old, under-powered Bosch unit.

R90s rebuild impressions
Just finished the rebuild on my 130k '74 R90s. 1st over bore and new Motoren Israel forged pistons with new rings, wrist pins installed. (my, is it just me or are those forged pistons too pretty to hide inside a motor?) I checked the balance on everything from the rods out, but total assemblies were...

Re: R90/6 trans trouble
your shifter return spring has more than likely snapped. Very, very common on early 5 speed boxes. Happened to my '74 R90s and my buddy's R90/6, albeit at different mileages. So if you're stuck in a certain gear, but the lever moves, that's probably it. Tranny will need to be removed. Most guys inst...

Re: I have my suspicions, but.......
thanks guys, I did pull one of the intakes and there is small bits of carbon, oil coking on the face of the valve and seat. So I'm going to have my local head guy do a quick lap and take it from there. I had Leo Goff (Memphis Motorwerks) last do my heads and no issues or complaints. In fact, the lig...

I have my suspicions, but.......
While re-doing the top end on my R90s, I of course have the heads off for de-carboning. Heads were completely gone through about 5 years ago. New exhaust valves, new springs, retainers and a 3 stage valve job. So I get most of the carbon off with careful scraping and remember what my late brother (w...

Re: R90s pistons source
Chas, so you'd recommend the forged pistons? how is the oil use after the rebuild? I have reservations only because I know the stockers are cast aluminum and I believe BMW engineer's (even from 1974) had their reasons for using them. I seem to recall that forged pistons used to require looser tolera...
