Re: '85 R80 Top End Rebuild

Hi Everyone, Thanks again for your advice. Checking the cam lifters turned out to be a good idea. Mine were showing a lot of wear, though the cam lobes looked fine. Getting my heads done at Hill Head & Machine Works in Seattle worked out very well. They pulled 'em apart, checked the valves and s...

Re: '85 R80 Top End Rebuild

Thanks for the advice everyone, I appreciate it. I've found a place here in Seattle, Hill Machine and Headworks, that gets good marks for doing airhead valves over on ADVRider. While they've got the heads and I'm replacing the rings is there anything else I should check while the top end is apart? T...

'85 R80 Top End Rebuild

Hi Everyone, I have a 1985 R80rt engine with an unknown number of miles on it that needs some love. It's been feeling pretty underpowered so I did a leak-down test. Both cylinders have air whistling out of the intake, exhaust, and dip stick hole, so I think I'm going to need to do a top-end rebuild....

Re: Clutch Wont Disengage

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to let y'all know that I finally got around to installing the 7mm friction plate, and voila! My clutch now fully disengages just fine. Thanks for all of your advice.

Re: Clutch Wont Disengage

What transmission are you using? Is the travel provided by the hand lever appropriate for the leverage of the throw out lever? The later clutch disks didn't have specs for thickness but you DO need to be very close to what the rest of the parts are designed for if it is to work. Do you have and can...

Re: Clutch Wont Disengage

Just looked up what I installed, it was an OEM 9mm friction disk for an r69.

Re: Clutch Wont Disengage

Thanks for the suggestions, folks, I think you both might have been right. I don't have the starter hooked up yet, but I went out to the bike, pulled in the clutch and shoved it forward as hard as I could. The clutch did disengage, and I can roll it back and forth, but I can hear a metallic noise co...

Clutch Wont Disengage

Hello everyone, I have a mutt of an engine which I am transplanting into a Ural frame. Everything has been going smoothly up until yesterday, when I hooked up my clutch cable and tried to disengage the clutch. The clutch-rod moved a few mm, and then stopped. The clutch won't disengage at all. Obviou...

Re: Modifying a BMW engine to drop into a Dnepr or Ural

Hi Mike, Thank you very much for the advice, I hadn't considered what issues could come up with the Dnepr pushrod. I actually read a lot of your old posts from when you were doing your conversion while I was getting ready for this project, and I will definitely get in touch if/when I run into proble...
