Re: starter relay

Hello ! On my 82 R65 the relay is in a plastic housing and can be opened. So if yours is of the same make, you could open it and see if the contacts are pitted or the coil shorted or cut open. If the contacts are badly pitted, this I think is due to contact corrosion somewhere. This makes sparks mor...

Re: 5 speed ribbed tranny rebuild

Hello ! It is only the tip of the harm which has been re-hardened and polished. The guy used some sort of induction heat to achieve correct temperature on the valve end of the rocker arm. He does this "every time" .... and return to normal life rockers that could belong to the scrap bin......

Re: 5 speed ribbed tranny rebuild

Hello ! One of my valves where noisy even with tight clearance. Turned out to be a rocker with a pit on the valve's contact part. The valve start to open then close again due to the hole in the rocker. Then opens up when clear from the hole. A friendly BMW mechanic polished it and treated it thermal...

Re: 5 speed ribbed tranny rebuild

Anton Largiader has here : http://www.largiader.com/tech/airtrans/ an explanation of your neutral switch problem.
It seems you've mixed an early gear change mechanism with a latter switch or vice versa !
You may be able to get the proper switch if you know the part number of the wrong one.

Re: 5 speed ribbed tranny rebuild

In my BMW factory manual for the 78_84 R65 they give a play from 0 to 0.1 mm so in fact the bearing should be stopped in moving but not tightly pressed. This make sense as the gears exert an axial pressure during operation. So the load is split between the balls in the bearings and the housing. As p...

Re: 5 speed ribbed tranny rebuild

Hi !
As English is far from my mother's tongue, I've often a hard time to make me clear. I suppose this is a lack of vocabulary and cultural difference !

Re: R65 electrical connectors

Hello ! I've just checked on the factory shop ( http://www.bmw-classic.de click on "parts shop") that they are available for my 1982 R65. As are the plugs. So instead of buying them direct from BMW in Germany and paying a lot of postage why you do not try the nearest BMW dealer ? I would t...

Re: Blowing a little too much smoke.

Hello ! I would take the equation by the dollar end. If you only work on the valve and rings, you need *also* new base barrel gaskets, head gasket, and rubbers for the push rods. And of course, rings and/or valves... Plus the time to work on it. So imagine you do not change the rod main bearing, and...

Re: 5 speed ribbed tranny rebuild

Well if you add an arm long enough the torque wrench will only give 108 Nm ! At the end of the arm, the torque will have reached 240 ! You can test my saying when you'll have the proper 240 Nm wrench by putting it in a wise and torquing it with the small one and an extension. The key work in torque ...
