Actually, the failure mode comes when you are attempting to pass a couple of semis doing 90 uphill, and then >chukka chukka zinnnng< as it lets go. Not a smooth transition, feels like the engine is cutting out.... HARD! First time it happened to me, I thought I had sucked a valve.
Did FD splines 4-5 years ago @ Bruno's .....$375 + postage to get FD to and from his shop in Iron Bridge, ON
Bruno cuts the old ones out and welds in new one. I ordered a new rear wheel drive dog and new rivets and installed myself although had professional shop do the preening. Total cost for part and preening about $150.
Now you can order the complete new rear drive splines from Motobins. On a high mileage 78 R100/7 I had our local shop do the labour ( cutting out the old ones and welding in the new one) he charged me $200 for labour and I supplied part for about $125.
Even though Bruno's is in Canada, 95 % of his business comes from the US....and the US dollar is very strong to the CDN$ about %15 ....
No financial interest in Bruno just a very satisfied customer over the years.

Once it lets go - is it gone totaly? Can you move slowly? Could you wrap beer can parts around the drive and shove the wheel over it and idle out of the desert?
Next month I plan a ride into wilds of Texas near the border. We usually turn around at a hot springs that is about 8 miles west of the end of the pavement.
On the one that let go under acceleration, it reengaged once I got off the throttle. Did it 2-3 times before I swapped it out. The splines were like nubs! The problem is, once you wear past the gear faces, wear is rapidly increased as the contact patch becomes progressively smaller. I would do that trip, no question, but that off road portion isn't going to be doing you any favors in the longevity department...

actually I will be taking wine - in glass bottles - but Randy drinks out of a box and that aluminized blatter may work. If not, this is Texas and you are never too far from an empty beer can.
