Yet another R90/6 Starting Problem

Post by Crunch »

I've been following the Project R90/6 starting problem on another thread with great interest and there is a lot of good information there. Without calling me by name I see where my good friend and boon companion Monte Miller made reference to the electrical gremlins that have plagued me with my R90/6 resurrection in that particular thread. And, without going into the full post mortem, much of which is not necessarily relevant, I have distilled it to the following issues.

Valves were adjusted, timing set, points correctly gapped, and carbs thoroughly cleaned and all orifii are confirmed clear. The starter was engaged and the engine would fire and run, but only as long as the starter switch was engaged. While trouble shooting I also discovered that the starter would engage with or without the ignition switch turned on. This is obviously not correct and after a short conversation with Rick Jones I ordered a new correct starter relay. The starter relay I was replacing was a Bosch substitute and obviously not correct. The new relay was installed and carefully wired as per the schematics found in my Haynes and Clymer manuals.

After this correction I no longer have the starter engaging at all. There is obviously something mis-wired in the system but as of this writing I've not had a chance to troubleshoot the wiring. So in summary I know the starter works, the starter switch works, and the bike will run. I just need the weather to cooperate so that I can get into the non heated garage with a test light and a good schematic. Any comments or suggestions from the cognoscenti will be greatly appreciated.

I would also like to offer my thanks to Monte Miller and Mike Valenti for the kind patience and time they have spent assisting me with this problem. They are each one great Airhead friends. -Mike

Sounds to me like either the ignition switch itself is incorrectly wired or the wire from it to the circuit board are in the wrong places.
