Damn, that's a great roadside fix Steve. I broke a clutch cable in New Orleans once. Ran the cable under the cylinder and clipped my vice grips to the cable. Rode across town to my house and replaced the cable. Now I carry a spare cable in my bags always!!! I like the way the vice grips fit the handle mount in the photo.

Ever done that through Warnambool Victoria Duane? Man, they must have 20 traffic lights in 5km and every one of them turns red when they see a BMW with a broken clutch cable.

Clutch cables aren't all that important when moving, but traffic lights are gonna do you over.

Shift to neutral to stop, then; turn key off, shift to first and start in gear. It's a little hard on the starter, but very doable.

Hmmmmm ok, providing neutral can be got. Sounds rather barbaric tho, even for me.

It's way easier to shift out of gear than in, when the engine is running, and vice versa...
