Finally Bagged a BMW!

Post by sbbloom69 »

Just bought a 1973 R75/5. Last registered in 1998. It's been in quonset hut storage for 17 years. It has a brand new (never installed) Wixom (spelling) fairing and bag set. Has original tool bag, owners manual and a 2nd manual in original plastic bag. It has 8100 miles on it. The man I got it from had a friend do a quick carb clean (not good enough). The tank had been sealed, but the sealer failed (probably has flakes everywhere). It was supposed to be a runner, the seller changed all fluids and put new tires on it. The bike started, but when warm the left cylinder sputters. Many of my buds said NO not another project bike, but hey, I've always wanted a BMW to join my Honda CBX, my KZ1300 and my Cagiva Alazzurra (650 Ducati Pantah). Being in NM, it has very little rust.

I bought it anyway for $1500. I didn't have the trailer with me so I have to drool for 2 WEEKS until I can pick it up.

I'll be sifting the site and others, getting info and tips/hints. I attempted to upload a pic.

Nice one and welcommen. Pix must be linked to from another website using the img brackets. Click that rectangle above your text box when writing and insert your jpeg link b/w the bracketed options.

Sounds like an absolute bargain as those things are escalating in price daily.

Sounds like you need to check the carb and tune.

Congratulations on buying a nice airhead at a really nice price. Not that I need another airhead but I'm giving you an envious green man anyhow.

Welcome aboard, Stu. An extraordinary bargain you have there, and I look forward to seeing pictures.

I'm probably not alone in hoping there are lots of expensive problems for you to deal with, in the hope that my almost overwhelming feelings of envy will be reduced to acceptable levels. Grin.

I had the pleasure of riding a friend's 1973 R75/5 for the first time a couple of days ago. Such a sweet ride. I really liked the 4 speed gearbox, too.

Hmmm---a bargain-priced, low-mile, desirable 70s motorcycle in long-term "quonset hut storage" near Los Alamos, NM. Does a used-bike-buying checklist there include a geiger-counter check? At any rate, if your other projects have included a CBX, KZ1300, and a Cagiva, an old airhead should be a breeze.

Hi,
Thanks for the welcome. I have to wait either 1 or 2 weeks before I can retrieve the bike. I didn't have my trailer with me when I bought it. I don't know the mfg date yet.

Our wonderful DMV here in NM. I took the title and insurance card down today to transfer and register it. I "forgot" to fill in the 8169 miles in the "odometer" block. The DMV clerk says "now you have to go all the way back 242 miles to T or C NM and get the PO to sign the "I forgot to fill in the odometer" form and get it signed"". She tagged the title to make sure everyone knows that I forgot to get the mileage.

Of course, I just got my wife to fill in the form (blue pen and a women's handwriting). I'll take it down Friday to get the title transferred.

I've already started accumulating stuff: PDF manuals, carb videos, etc. I'll probably just pre-order carb kits, and maybe the petcock kits (both weep a little). Is there an easy aftermarket petcock that works?

Also, I'll more than likely have to treat the tank. It has some rust and flaking old sealer. I have my standard method of cleaning tanks that works pretty well.

I'm not scared of the carbs, actually I'm looking forward to it. My CBX has 6 carbs and my KZ1300 has 3 2-barreled carbs. 2 easy Bings ought to be a breeze, like the DelOrto's on my Ducati.

I'll probably not be able to sit still this weekend and I'll just go pick it up (the PO offered to haul it 3/4 the way in 2 weeks).

I"ll keep in touch, especially when I get the bike home and take some more pix.

How do you post a picture? When I tried, I got an error saying "my quota was full". I cut the size/quality down to 75kb, but it still wouldn't work.

OOPS, someone already said all I can do is post a link to an external pic. I'll try that.
