We don't mind some modifications around here, but you go and start talking "aftermarket petcocks", and, well, you might find yourself in for a fight. (No, not really, just my wee opinion).
But seriously, if you can't afford a new one (can't blame you), a good one from a known breaker should save you some money.
Some PO's would cut off the short "straw" on the petcock to increase the range on their reserve.
There should be a long screen over the intake tube, and if it is the straight "exits at 6 o'clock" style, there should be a small screen in the bottom, after the valve and before the nipple. Between these two screens, you should not need an aftermarket fuel filter. (imo)

Re: Finally Bagged a BMW!
Congratulations on your new bike, Stu! I should know you chose the right one, since I also managed to get myself a '73 75/5 earlier this summer
How did you find the manufacture _date_? I was told, via the BMW Club in UK, that the manufacture records in Germany were a bit lacking wrt that info. Only got Feb '73 for mine.

+1 Many thanks for the tip, lots of info on http://5united.org/, including an owner's manual, which I've been looking for.templetommy wrote: . . . check out the 5 United forum on yahoo and /5 site on facebook good information
