Hey All,
I was doing some more wrenching tonite and noticed the cap that goes on the vent tube on top of the final drive was lying in my driveway. Guess it came off when I was using my rubber mallet tapping the shocks back in place. Don't know how it stays on there there now. Can I use a dab of epoxy to put it back on?
Thanks
Kelly

Re: Final Drive Vent Cap
What model bike? I have my vent pulled out of my r75/5 and apart. The cap is spot welded in the center to the top of the tube pressed into the hub. The tube in the hub is closed at the top and has some holes in it.The cap is welded on just high enough over the tube that is can breath without getting water in, like a miniature umbrella

Re: Final Drive Vent Cap
So looks like I need to be careful not to block the small vent holes. Boy that wont be easy!
Re: Final Drive Vent Cap
Probably won't matter on dry roads, but in the short term could you tap it and screw the cap back on?

Careful use of a toothpick application of JB Weld secured the cap on my 1981 R65 seven years ago. Still securely in place. Still venting.

Re: Final Drive Vent Cap
montmil,
Did you just put it around the inside edge of the cap, or the outside edge of the plug?

Re: Final Drive Vent Cap
IIRC, I dabbed a bit on both inside and outside locations as mentioned. Pushed it in place, removed it to check for goop contact and venting allowance, then tucked it in. Works fine. It's an unstressed component.

A little heat and you can remove the vent from the bevel drive, drill and tap it, done.
Or just buy this for a buck more, which I would have done if it was available at the time.
