Considering, and acknowledging khittner1's comment, could you add if you carried much extra load, such as a pillion, or very full panniers before you noted the crack, or the lack of rubbing?

I did carry much extra load, pillion, very full panniers, lots stacked on the back of the bike and on top of the panniers, full tank bag, fairing stuffed with rain gear and a full tank of gas. Way to go.





Even my motorcycle yoga 'whole motorcycle flex massage' didn't cause the crack to wear together. In fact there was essentially no damage at all to the edges of the steel, on close inspection. So that says to me it didn't move, which is a little difficult to imagine.
I left it for maybe nine months to a year (after noticing it) before welding it. I used a 2mm electrode to weld it.
My crack was right along the toe of the weld, yours is just a little further out from the weld.

Speaking of which; do the Brown stands "stand up"? Mine needs a fix and I was wondering about the Brown side stand reputation here..

The Brown side stand is aces in my book. I've had the same one for 30 years with nary a problem.

Thanks - that's the testimonial I was hoping for. My '70 sidestand is pretty scary these days.

The Brown can be deployed from the normal riding position and is stout as need be. When on a long tour, I appreciate being able to use a side stand that works as well as those on other bikes. After two and a half hours sitting in the same position, between fill ups, it's nice to be able to deploy, and then get off the bike and then, to sit back on the bike, rocking it up off the stand as you get on. It's the way to go for touring or longer rides.

I'm not crazy about how it looks, though.

What's a sidestand?

Since I did the sameset mod (using a RH footpeg on the LH side) I can't deploy the sidestand from the saddle as the peg shades it.

Probably just as well I never got into the habit of using it. But I have to keep up with yoga so I can get on and off the bike while on no stand whatsoever.
