I'm rebuilding my calipers and was wondering if anyone knows what this is... it looks like a threaded stud but it isn't visible when looking inside the caliper reservoir.
ATE Brake - What is this part/piece?
Re: ATE Brake - What is this part/piece?
I think that's just a hard rubber buffer whose purpose is to immobilise the caliper between the two "ears" of the fixed part of the caliper. Without them (there should be one on the other side, as well), the swinging part of the caliper will move along with the brake disk when you apply the brakes. I've found them glued into the shallow hole they sit in, but I'm not sure if it was a "press fit" originally.

I think it is a scuff pad to protect the ears on the forks. Sort of protects from metal to metal contact as the caliper moves sideways.

Probably protects but in the way it also lets the caliper slide easier...imagine if it was metal to metal...that wouldn't slide at all.

Great thanks everyone. So here's what these 38 year old ATE calipers look like after a complete rebuild and a bit of polishing. They are so shiny my wife pulled out her lipstick to see if she could put on makeup looking at them and joked that if they weren't so heavy she'd keep one in her purse.

My brother by another mother! I've done that, too:
I figured I could use it as a campground shaving mirror.

Call me Mel. Some years ago- never mind how long precisely- having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me at home, I thought I would ride about a little and see the other parts of the world.
