Hi folks!
i find the riding-posistion on the /6 a bit hard on my back. Would like to go higher and maybe wider. I have the low bars. Anybody know how far I can go without having to mess with the cables? I am willing to do the wires for throttle, clutch and brakes, but don't want to mess up the electrics. This is a late '73, so one of the first /6's with /5 setup.
What I really would like is bars from a GS or similar.
Any thoughts or experience?

The brake cable is the same if you have disc. Just route it on the right side of the steering head for high bars.
The other control cables have different PNs for low and high bars but the cables can be routed within limits.
The electrics will be the limitation. Pop your headlight open to see how much of the thick flexible conduit is inside the shell. There's a tiny chance your bike had high bars before and wires were just pushed into the shell.

I think Melville is about right if you go for BMW American style high bars but if you have to go up to 'GS bars, I think you'll be struggling. The brake might be made to reach by routing it outside the forks but I doubt it. It is difficult to see how 'low bar' clutch cables and throttle cables could be made to reach at all. For clutch and throttle, I think you could make do with 'GS specific cables but, if the brake cable won't reach, then you are stuck with a custom made cable. I know that Venhill in the UK will make up a cable to spec and are pretty good... there are certainly others who will do it.
The electric wires are probably the easiest of all. A few lengths of wire (preferably matching colours), some heat shrink tube, some connectors and a soldering iron to extend the existing cables however long you want...

I know it's quite easy to do the electrics, but reluctant to cut it up. Hard to find these old harnesses untouched. I somehow need to do something with the old girl, she sits in the shed to much. The R850R gets all the action. What I really would like is to go en easy scrambler way, but limited budget, and not sure if I want to mess to much with an, otherwise than wrong color, original and good bike.
Best I think would be if I found a basket case of a bike to build up.. Hmmm. I think I'll leave it for now and think a bit.

what if you made extensions for the wiring harnesses using similar male/female ends.
Then you're not damaging the original, but you'd have to trace each wire to the end, which is probably just in the headlight shell anyway. Tape up the new extension harness. Since each individual wire is probably a different length, you won't wind up with a big lump from a single point of all the connections. Can't imagine the new harness needs to be more than 6 to 8 inches and would end just outside the headlight shell.
