Do tank covers work?

Here's my tank today. I haven't seen it for a few years. Yes I use a tank cover.

The next owner will definitely pay your heirs a premium for that great original paint job and hand striping,
Keep it in secluded darkness, away from prying eyes till then.
We both know you'll never sell that bike, right?

I'm not sure if it is more noble to die with mint original parts, or to die with patina'd and refurbished parts.
I'm still trying to figure a way to take my bike with me when my number's up.
So far, a spectacular crash'n'burn looks like our only viable exit option.

I like putting my own patina on shiny stuff. Coming up on 10 years doing that with Ernst.

But the next couple bikes (/7 and RS) have 30 years of coastal storage patina and I'm digging that, too. The /7 will remain all patinated. But I think the RS will get a shiny chassis to go with the OG painted fairing, tank, seat, and fender.

Well I have no plans to sell it. 50+ years ago I remember "the old guy on his BMW." That left a lasting impression on me. Now I'm the old guy on his BMW!

More nobel to die having been the original owner (or self restored), and to have maintained, and ridden the machine to it's capacity. It's a rare riding day, my bike doesn't see the ton. It was designed for that.

Years back I was getting tank covers made and selling them on ebay.

The local bloke that made them decided in the end that the quote he gave me to make them was too low and ceased doing them.

Shame. They were good too but I probably sold them too cheap.

I loved my first one, got it soon after buying the bike in the Spring of 1980.
My philosophy was my own, and simple: "When the paint is perfect, it keeps it that way. After it gets scratched, it hides them."

I liked the ones best that had thin pockets that hugged the tank, as opposed to the cargo pockets. Big enough for maps (remember those?).

I grew up in a home with plastic covered furniture. When I left home, they took off the plastic, and had the furniture reupholstered.
