That RMS tool...

Post by dougie »

The tool/jig used for installing the rear main seal.
I know it can be bought.
I know it can be made (I have the layout).
But I remember someone (Jean?) saying they just tapped it in with a piece of ABS pipe.
Is the tool really necessary? Safer rather than sorry?
I've spent most of my money on women, motorcycles, and beer.
The rest of it I just wasted.

Both ways work. You can mess it up either way too. The main thing is to get it in far enough that it doesn't rub on the flywheel and no deeper than a flush mount. I prefer to put it in shalower because you are less likely to have the seal ride in the old groove. You can try to put it in at the depth of the old seal, put the PO may have messed it up on the last change. If it is at all uneven then you will have problems down the road.

I'm in the 'better safe than sorry' camp with this one. It is an easy thing to make and you have almost micrometer accuracy.

Edited to add: This is the size for my 90/6 - I dunno the size for the later 'clutch carrier' flywheels.

Nice tool Charlie.

I'm in the press it in by hand, then hit with a hammer, then take it apart and fix the leak again, camp.

What are the skinny bolts with the nuts for?

Those are Airbear's clutch disassembly bolts. Also in the pic is his swingarm pivot locknut socket, shaved to fit the recess in the frame.
Call me Mel. Some years ago- never mind how long precisely- having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me at home, I thought I would ride about a little and see the other parts of the world.

The holes need to be at least 11mm for bikes built after 1974. 12mm would be ideal.

Well the bike is not in for the winter yet (ever hopeful), but it soon will be and my parts arrived today from Motobins.

So I decided I will make the RMS tool.
Perhaps some Finnish birch plywood, cherry stain and Danish oil. Something Chuey might like.

That new style RMS is weird - the centre part looks almost flimsy.

Comrade Airbear,

I hope you are using the new style seal. The old style is not as forgiving, as far as grooving on the seal contact surface, and re-leaking is concerned.
Any and all disclaimers may apply
