Reusing use once only bolts

OK, so I have located a supply in NZ for seals for my R80, my question is from the experienced people is re using the following fasteners.

Flyweel Bolts (11mm)

Clutch Bolts.

Drive Shaft bolts (later version without the lock washers)

The bike has only done 500miles since these were fitted and now I have to pull it apart again, while I do not want to waste money I don't want a an expensive smash up.
I will pull it all apart once I get over this Covid bug.

I re-use the same bolts when its my own bike.
If you're going to lose sleep over it, spend $50 and get new bolts.

Hi, yeah your probably right except the price her for me is quite a bit higher due to the exchange rate and shipping costs, not one dealer in NZ has any of these fasteners in stock and delivery time is shocking.

Finally found a dealer here that has the rear main seal OEM on the shelf, it costs way more than the pattern item I was sold in the first place but if it means it wont leak then I don't mind.

1) 11mm Clutch Carrier bolts (flywheel bolts) are not single use... BMW Service Information 11 049 91 refers.

2) Can't find a reference for clutch cover bolts but I'm fairly sure those used on the later (light) clutch aren't stretch bolts and can be re-used. If you have the earlier (heavy) clutch, they should to be changed... from experience, if you decide to re-use them examine the heads because the sockets have a habit of becoming deformed which makes for problems when torqueing and subsequently loosening.

3) I would always replace drive shaft bolts. I have seen several cases where re-used bolts have failed. Failure can be cumulative... i.e when one fails, the others are that much more overstressed and fail in quick succession (and before external symptoms become severe) and the damage done when they do fail has to be seen to be believed.

Many antipodean BMW enthusiasts buy from Motobins or Motorworks in the UK... I understand that delivery times and costs can be no worse than local suppliers and there is better availability...

I've ordered stuff from antipodean BMW shops (Motobins) and the best delivery time was 3 days. Ordered Tuesday evening (maybe 10am UK time), delivered Friday arvo, to Melbourne, Vic, Oz. Over the years that's happened 2-3 times. Usually it's the following week, b/w Wed & Friday. The trick is to plan ahead...no rush. The price is always cheaper, but the post can be a killer if items are heavy. I avoid pattern parts, but not exclusively.

If you need it tomoz, then Munich in Perth can get it to any capital city via express post.

That little extra over the Tasman Sea will add time of course as distance is the tyrant.

On a side note:

If it's really that hard and time consuming to get parts, I would order a couple sets of drive shaft bolts, and maybe a set of clutch bolts, along with any other maintenance items you may need. That way the shipping costs will be minimal per item, the more parts you order.

This year, I've been ordering most parts from Euro Motoelectric (EME) and they've been very reasonably priced and quick to ship. EME also has some good reproduction parts that are less expensive. While they do shipping internationally, you would have to reach out to them to see if they will ship to your location. https://www.euromotoelectrics.com/ I know there are more than one good reputable places to order parts. Just thought I'd pass along one. I've also placed orders from Motobins; however, it's taken a lot longer for the parts to arrive using Motobins.

Parts I can't get to easily I would use new. For driveshaft bolts, if they thread easily by fingers, I'd reuse...with some blue Loctite.

Thanks Rob, I have the heavy flywheel and clutch so I will replace the clutch along with the drive shaft bolts, I just have to wait for the OEM seal am not going near a pattern item again.

As for suppliers iv'e used Motorworks who for me seem best, Motobins my last order got held up going through the USA for 4 weeks and another supplier in Australia was the worst at 2 months, slowest from Motorworks was 7 days.

The Royal Mail network in UK was hacked and was down between 1/10 and 1/26 (I think I've got the dates correct). Royal Mail paused the delivery and shipment internationally during that time frame. I had two orders from UK (one from Motobins) that were held up due to this. So, if your order was during that time frame, it would explain some of the delay. For me, an order from Motobins takes about two weeks.

Yeah well it seems to vary no matter where you are, I have placed an order with Motorworks in the UK for a few items and via snail mail it's 12 days, the OEM parts are a month away so we will see what lands first.
