Front Fork Seal Replacement 86 R65

Post by ARK1520 »

After removing the dust covers on my 86 R65 fork sliders, I found what appear to be washers that went between the seals and the dust covers. None of the manuals reference these washers. Does anyone know if they are necessary, or something that was added?

Have a look at the parts list section 31 and diagram #31_0362 item 2 which is the fork seal and there does seem to be what they list as a spacer ring.

Interesting... That would be the spacer ring 31 42 1 458 474...

I'm pretty sure my R80RT (same forks) doesn't have them.

They aren't shown on the BMW ETK (2002 and 2006 versions)

Running a part number search on the part number gives no response.

I can't actually see what they would achieve in the position described.

Enduralast list then... described as Copper Fork Shim...

Still can't see where they would fit or what they are intended to achieve...

No answer then but I'd certainly like to know what it is.

Thank you for the responses. I put them back when I changed out the seals.
