1982 BMW R100RT - Left Upper Fairing Not Attached to Front Support Bar

Post by gsm_r100rt »

While installing the left handlebar controls, I noticed that the Upper Fairing is not attached to the Front Support Arm.

I tried moving around the whole fairing (bottom lower left/right/center removed) to try to get the bolt closer to the bracket. I couldn't seem to do this solo.

Do I have to loosen/remove more fairing parts to get this attached?

Any advice would be appreciated.

I have an RS, so not quite the same.

The fiche shows the upper attachments as captive and the lower ones as open. Is that correct? If so, someone hasn't quite done the job correctly last time.

If it was mine I'd inspect all attachments first thing. Especially those open lower mounts to see if it's slipped out. Then there's the two bolts into the steering stem to check.

Maybe loosen the bottom two, leave top right as a hanger point and see if it then swings into a better position.
Disconnecting the lowers might help there too. :?:

Loosen all of the attachments for the fairing... no need to remove them completely... you should, then be possible to get the bracket to line up. It may also help to loosen all of the screws attaching the uppers to the lowers and front.

If things still don't line up, you need to investigate whether the brackets themselves have become deformed. Bear in mind it may be one or more of the other mounting brackets that is pulling the fairing out of line.
