Early vs Late model alternator rotors
Early vs Late model alternator rotors
My friend with the 1990 GS has discovered his alternator rotor is kaput. At $450 plus from BMW he is looking for alternative alternators. My question is this: Hucky sells rotors for /7 for $160. Is this a direct swap, or would the stator ring etc need to be replaced as well? Does a "17a" (MaxBMW) need a matching stator to work? Thanks in advance!

Re: Early vs Late model alternator rotors
Try motorrad electrik...they have new rotors for $124.95 and remanufactured ones for $90.00 USD.

I put a reman one on my 91 GS 3 years ago and running great. No problems. Rick's a great guy to deal with too.
Think rotor from /7 should work on the 90 GS..think both models are the 280watt setup. No need to swap out stator should work with new 280w rotor.

Motobins also has the choice between the expensive and identical function (they claim) cheap rotor.

Don't have anything bad to say about Motobins, but I KNOW that Motorrad Elektrik gives very good service and support.SteveD wrote:Motobins also has the choice between the expensive and identical function (they claim) cheap rotor.

Re: Early vs Late model alternator rotors
I've used Motobins over the past few years along with a few of my riding mates. We try and combine orders for one shipment.. Never been disappointed with selection, availability, prices or deliveries. We get most orders 4-6 days from England to Canada.
I ordered a particular part for my R75/6...within an hour of placing order I had an e-mail questioning my selection (you have to give model info/year/even vin#) so they make sure you are ordering the right part. Amazing, I had ordered a SS brake line for my 74 R75/6 but it was incorrect...they verified by e-mail and sent me the correct one!
I can get parts faster from England than the US even though I', only 4 hrs north of the border.

Me too. I remember looking on (metaphorically) as Veg fought his intermittent charging issue on his Batbike. I was impressed then, as I have been with all of the "testimonials" I've heard about Rick.

Rick will have it all over Motobins for technical support, but from where I sit here in Oz, 'bins provide an excellent service with a huge inventory.
Rick's good on delivery, so it will usually get down to the total cost for like articles.
eg
Rotor OZ$127 + post from Rick.
Rotor OZ$78 + post from 'bins.
