There is a good article out there somewhere on suspension fluids, and the current state of play.
Their opinion is that best product available today is Maxima full synthetic HVI suspension fluid.
Synthetic is naturally multigrade so it stays in grade as it heats up, and it also stays in grade longer.
It lubes better than dino too, so the fork action is improved.
It doesnt easily compare to dino in grades , but 5 wt works much better than the 10 wt ? ATF the PO had in my G/S forks.

ATF or Hydraulic Oil were the "old school" standards to be used in damper-rod type forks.
ATF is factory spec.d for many makes & models –
