What has worked for me is hitting the ends of the screws with an automatic center punch. The screws can be removed without damaging the shaft by grinding the mushroomed screw end off with a dremmel tool.
The 77 RS belonging to a friend swallowed just one of those screws, resulting a complete teardown and engine rebuild.
