Hey, hang on a minute. We stole those hills fair and square from the original inhabitants.

How about 'splainin' what the deal is with "Charlie's island"? Does he live on an island?

I think Charlies leases the island from the authorities when the rising water level in the lake cuts the island off from the mainland. Normally a farmer agists his stock on the isthmus and island. The stock are removed when the water level rises and Charlie (Max) takes over his private kingdom.

It's not quite like that. I simply regard it as my private kingdom and claim it whenever I wish, like any good pirate would. I've been camping there for over 20 years - my kids kind of grew up there. Visitors drop in, maybe setting up for a week or so, or just appear as day visitors. We had 9 sleep over a couple of nights ago. My personal favourites are the gorgeous young women who bring beer and invite me to go skinny dipping.



The lake is lovely to swim in, and perfectly benign. The island is covered with elm and peppercorn trees, with leafy glades to camp in.
