A lot of that stuff looks like it's in that difficult state of being not good enough to use, but too good to throw away.

I'm pretty sure that I would have actually thrown some of it away though. Of course you never know when you'll need that old cover you took off your seat when you put the new one on.

We kept many old useless parts, only for them to become useful later.

1. To make a tool.

2. To use as a demonstration of what can, or will happen.

3. To use to load up a mildly damaged bike before the insurance inspector arrived. The intent was to reduce/eliminate the deductible charge.

4. To use for a later warranty claim.

5. To use for photos for my website. Thanks to all who offered them.

I am sure that I am forgetting a few uses for old useless parts.

So, with 3 & 4, you are proclaiming to be a crook and fraud? Not such a good self recommendation.

Hi SB. Haven't heard from you for a while. I have been working 12 hrs/day 5 or 6 days a week since Oct 09.
Doesn't leave much time for the riding but the old /6 has been receiving some much needed work. New top end, new pistons, new valves, guides etc, all seals changed. new clutch, new timing chain etc. Purrs like a kitten now. Also dumped the goldwing an now have a GS for a ride to Alaska I was planning for this coming summer but put off for a year until this job is done. However with what we see happening in Egypt, Jordan etc, looks like things are shaping up as predicted. Maybe I should move up the trip?

Hey Paul! Good to see you here. My '87 R80RT is running well - in spite of the high-side crash I put her (and me) through last September. I simply don't see me going on such a long ride as you are planning - but I know in Whom you trust, so it will end well even if you don't

It has never been my intent to recommend myself in this venue or any other at this late date. My customers were to judge me and the operation, that was enough.

With # 3 it was a reaction to crooked insurance appraisers who systematically cheated their policy holders, our customers. It didn't result in more money in my pocket, only customer satisfaction at arriving at a fair settlement from the insurance company. Often, the customer would leave damaged parts with us, but at no greater rate than any repair.

#4, Butler and Smith refused claims on many honest warranty repairs. They suggested that we just claim a repair that we knew that they would approve. We repaired every honest warranty job without regard to whether we got paid by Butler and Smith. No other BMW shop in our area even pretended to do so.

In 1973 I didn't submit a single warranty claim. We just fixed them at our expense and forgot about it.

Many thanks for your reply - and the link to the back story. In context, your statements make sense. Without that context, my impressions as stated above make sense. Life is rarely as simple as we see it, in bits and pieces.

I am thankful for this site - and the work you've done here. If we meet, know that I do not sit in judgment on you. Reading your story reminded me of some of the reasons I have never gone into business for myself
