final drive question...

Post by dougie »

In the rear bevel drive, should there be any clearance between the pinion and crown gears.
My only experience is with a bevel drive camshaft that needed to be adjusted to zero clearance.
I've spent most of my money on women, motorcycles, and beer.
The rest of it I just wasted.

Thanks Rob.
Mine is a Monolever (1987). Don't know if that makes a difference.

Thanks.
Now I see it is in my Haynes manual.
I never looked because the text says that service to the bevel drive is not covered and must be done by a dealer.

Keep us posted. I am interested. Where does one get shims for these?

MaxBMW has shims listed.
This will take me a while. I have a spare FD that I justed installed on the bike.
The crown gear depth seems to be adjusted with inner and outer shims.
I am going to put in a new large outer bearing and then start trying to figure out the spacing.

Fiddly if not difficult job on a twin shock this one. Seems most aren't prepared to have a go, in fear of a stuff up. I can't remember ever finding any "how to's" on the net. Brief descriptions describe accurate shimming and using colour on the interface to assess accuracy followed by doom and gloom comments.
A pictorial guide, with detailed description, would make many an airhead braver than they were before reading it I suspect. Including me.

That's a good link and will be useful to monolever owners.

Whilst there are some useful bits of info in there, I wish there was a site that was specific to twin shocks.
