Yes as I remember ( long time ago) it took a long time to get my verticals testing consistently. As I remember< my technique was to make a "U" and stop momentarily at the top of each side. Heat buildup was a challenge. Where my flats were easy peasy. I probably didn't have the best helmet visor. It scares the shit out of me when I realized the new shields automatically darken! Techniques employed to steady the welding hand vary considerably.
The welding helmet must have a clean, correctly shaded (for the individual) lens. If ya can't see what yer doing really well, yer aint got much hope.

I know you're talking about "safety" as far as really protecting your eyes, but the fact that you can immediately see when you stop welding actually makes them safer as far as the other hazards that often surround you when welding.
They sure make it easier to do a good job welding, at least for hacks like myself.

Yep, safe as.
When building bang bang tanks (my last job) I used a Speedglas Adflo helmet.
Air fed helmet with filtered air line.
Auto darkening with adjustable shade and sensitivity.
Much larger lens, maybe 4-1/2" square.
MUCH mo better than the old style helmets, which I am back to using again in my latest job. Ah well.
Different techniques for different joint configurations for vertical up.
Butt weld, outside corner to corner, inside corner fillet weld etc etc.
Welding aluminium tanks was a much cleaner job than welding mild steel!

When I'm out in the twisties, all jap bikes are zero's. I know they were on the same side as my RS Messerschmitt, but it's just too much fun shootin' 'em down.

It's my understanding that you'd do a lot better with the Zero. The Corsair was a nose-heavy BITCH to fly. The Zero, like the Spitfire, was supposed to be pretty forgiving for a nimble fighter plane.ME 109 wrote:New plan. Forget the Zero.
