I'd tune and balance them again after a long enough ride to get the engine up to temp.

If the needles were wrong, there's no reason to think any of the jets are right, and they have numbers on them. I'd be especially curious about the needle jets.

I actually did the tune and balance after a ride, it was warmed up nicely.

Needle jets were correct. 268. Go figure. This is the way this bike has been. I've had it for nearly 5 years now and am slowly getting it all back the way it should be.

Wiring is no longer 'twist and tape' connections.
Valves are in the correct ports now, intake and exhaust were swapped ;-(
The brake lines are now properly run.
Rear drive has been replaced.
New coils, condenser, relays, etc.
and now, what seems to be the right needles. (I'll call Bing tomorrow with the measurements of the installed and the new ones to verify).
Buy land. They ain't making any more of the stuff.

So here is the answer direct from Bing:

the 241 needles are 2.165 long

the longer ones (2.4") the PO put in there were probably for a 40mm carb.

Bigger hole, bigger carb, longer slide, longer needle . . . makes sense to me.
