I have a small piece of adhesive backed rubber between the fairing and the master cylinder.

Well I guess I’m an S man since I have a couple of them; a 78 R100S “Touring” (meaning a BMW blessed installation of a Luftmeister fairing by Butler and Smith), and also a ‘77S. And I really really like the styling of an S bike. But other than that I’m not going to be that dashing, debonaire, sophisticated, man’s man and woman’s man that I read into your post. Plus (oh the shame) I harbor the notion that the RS is sexier than a S bike. So I guess that would make me something like a rebel S man, more of a gentle giant kind of rebel S man, quietly confident in his own definition of S man.

But to your questions:

Maintaining headlight vertical position for best illumination: – It’s never been a problem, maybe because I don’t have no steenkin’ rubber seal around the headlight rim.

Vibration damping:— What vibration? Fairing rattle? Never been a problem. The bit of rattle that I have helps keep me awake.

Mirror positioning: — Never been a problem. I can see my shoulders just fine.

Best optional windscreens: — A medium height parabellum so I don’t have to keep doing pullups against the wind.

Barn door fairings: — Depends on my mood. When I’m about ease and creature comfort I take my ‘77 R100/7 with its barn door Luftmeister fairing, and cases including the infamous top box. With the /7 I strike a pretty good old-fart-on-a-slow-Beemer stereotype. (On the S bike I strike a pretty good old-fart-on-a-better-bike-than-he-deserves stereotype.)

Now ZM, I have a question for you: Why do you ask?

An interesting bike. If I lived in Vancouver I would want to see it. But I would ask a lot of questions to the owner first.

At first the $5.5K price made me catch my breath. At least it's only Canadian dollars.

But then $5.5K isn't as much money as it used to be either. And the bike only has 10K (miles or kilometers) on it. In fantasy land, if the bike were being produced today, it would have to sell new for over $15K. So what would a slightly used one then be worth in today's money?

I notice that the owner didn't make any statements about the condition of the bike though. I wonder why. And small pics like the 4 shown just won't reveal a lot of possible issues. I wonder what has been going on with the bike for 28 years. Obviously it has spent nearly its whole life in storage--and what kind of storage?

I would be very leery of the bike.

I also notice that it has a drum rear brake. Did that happen between the '82 and '83 model years? I was under the impression otherwise.

The bike is in Vancouver. Isn't that somewhere near ZM? I think he should go see it and report back. Wait! If it was a bargain then he would add it to his stable and we'd all be eating our livers.

Over here in Yoorp the model designation from '80 to '84 was R100CS and they did indeed come with the most excellent Brembos on the front and a splendid drum brake on the rear. My personal belief is that the R100S from '77 to '79 has some of the worst brakes ever fitted to a motorcycle.

My '84 has a drum rear brake.

As much as I'd enjoy the liver ingestion, three bikes is all I have time to maintain. I'm at my limit. My rule is that any machine I own must be prepared for an extended journey at anytime. One never knows when the British will return to recapture her territories.

Well my Gaydar may not be very well developed but that guy!

The RS is no doubt presents with gentilesse, and elegance, but does not have the testosteronic mechanical presence of a good S.
