Dead bike.

Riding home, I noticed that the charge lamp come on everytime i used the brake and the voltmeter dropped down to no charge. Everything went back to normal when i released the brake pedal. When I got home and switched off the engine, i could not start again. No control lamps light up on the instrumental panel but the headlights turn on.
This should be a fairly simple matter but I dont want to spend time searching for a fault when the weather is so fine after a hard winter.....
Any of you had this before?

Indian, my old friend. It is nice to hear from you again. I seem to have lost your email, so please send it again. Got news. I was just over in your neck of the woods recently.

You say the headlight comes on? While it is on, hit the brake to see if that again kills the system. For me, the question is this; Is the fault also not charging the battery (likely). If you didn't have the headlight working, then I would suspect a bad connection to the battery, or a bad battery.

The battery is charging. The headlamps are bright so there is charge in the 6 year old Hawker battery. It could seem like an earth fault?
I can start the bike now. All dead.

Good to see you again, Indian.
Check your fuses. My old girl has been doing the same thing lately. I have an electronic speedo/tach, and when I pull on the brake the instrument stops working but the (separate) charge lamp comes on. It is intermittent and I can get it working again by opening up the headlight and giving the fuses a poke, or a twist, to make a good connection again. My task for today is to get some proper fuse holders (the ones that take the blade-type fuses). I hope your problem is as easily fixed.
