Halogen Headlight Upgrade

Post by boxertwinjeff »

BTW I did do a search here first for info on this subject but to no avail.
My Headlight which is all original has just about given up the ghost, now shining
at around 1 Candle power lol!,. also the Reflector appears to have a hole burnt in it.
I believe there is a Halogen upgrade available for /5s. Can you guys recommend a particular
system and approx price? thanks again Jeff.

Ditto macdaddy's comment. However, I recently swapped out my stock /5 Bosch lens for an R65 H4 lens designed for halogen lamps. The difference in the lighting pattern was a significant improvement over the stock lens.

Would relays be mandatory for the upgrade?

Recommended in every case. I recommend the following:

Standard 3 mm OD or 12 gauge wire is rated 10 amps/120 watts so it should it has a bit to spare, but if the wires are 2.5 mm 14 gauge is getting borderline on old wiring.

But the cable isnt the only problem, the switches come into it too.DAHIK

A relay and direct wiring is almost always a good idea as most switches are not designed to carry big loads - even the cheapest car runs everything through a relay these days, all the switches carry is the little bit current required to fire up the relay.
