Valeos are currently made in Poland, such is the nature of flobal outsourcing.

My problems are getting worse, the starter seems to be not properly engaging, had to push the bike this morning to get it started But not a viable method to get the 1k miles home. We took the starter offthis evening, running the starter off the bike the solenoid engages and pushes the starter gear fully out, but then it comes back about a centimeter, and then oscillates in and out.

Is this normal? Or should it stay fully out?

All help welcomed. At least valeo solenoids should've easy to find in france

This should be the solinoid that you want: http://www.euromotoelectrics.com/product_p/val-sol1.htm

You should have a Valeo Ref# D6RA7 starter. Let me see if I can find a Valeo part number for the solenoid.

OK, the Valeo part number for the solinoid is 594173.

There is a US company by the name of Wagner and their number is W452-13N.
There where BMW numbers listed on the EME page in the last post.

Good luck.

New solenoid to be picked up tomorrow, James from emc thinks that starter sticking on may be due to stater relay sticking, this could well be true as relay contacts were pitted. Hopefully solenoid will solve issue but am not sure.
On the positive came through some fantastic mountain roads over the past fewdays, road conditions are really good on the Spanish side of the border, weather is in the30sC, andno traffic. Bike did 60 mpg yesterday.

We havesourced and replaced the solenoid, engages better but still very noisy. I'm on the way home, but bump starting when I can, saving the starter for absolutely flat ground. I will want to take it apart when I get home to see what damage there is.

59 mpg today, 30C, highway speeds and nasty crosswinds

When they first hit the streets and then started falling apart several years later, we at BMW dealers named them "the French Revenge"
But I thought we LIBERATED them!

Now, if they had only sold them in Germany...
I was talking about Germany!
BMW bought thousands of them when they started installing them on Airheads in the mid to late eighties, and then all the Oilheads from 94 on.
Hence the French revenge comment.
