Noob Coomute Question

I have a 76 R75/6 with under 50k miles. I've ridden it close to home on weekends for a while now. It runs, so far, like a top. I've been thinking of trying a commute on it once every week, 80 miles round trip, 50 of which would be at 65-70mph. Is this a reasonable expectation of a bike this old? How often should it need service or adjustment running 100 miles or so a week? Or should I stick to my 20 mile per Saturday leisure ride? Thanks!

That's it. Those bikes travelled the world. Change the oil when you should. Service it when you should.

Good tires with adequate air pressure is all I can think of at the moment!
We had a discussion a while back about the recommended air pressures in the old bike manuals not being proper for the new tires. New tires want more air.

He's too modest to step forward, but there is a Lotus Elite mechanic in the area that frequents this board who has wrenched on a few BMWs as well. Calls himself "The Wedge" or something like that. He'll prolly show up sooner or later.

Those 20 mile rides are just a little more than enough to warm your engine up. Get out on that highway and stretch her legs more. These bikes were made to cover miles.

My 75/7 only a couple of years older than yours loved to be out for a good run - I reckon it was actually good for it.
Just be extra aware on the roads, commuter traffic is different to weekend traffic and you might want to adjust your riding accordingly.

I will. I'll have a black folding chair and a Red/White cooler, and usually park my butt near the light pole on the left side of the driveway entrance.
