another hair brained idea

Post by twist »

OK, so I have another in a long list of ideas that may or may not be a GOOD idea. I am removing a Pichler full fairing to install an S fairing using a modified RT main fairing bracket, so the S fairing will be mounted to the steering head, not the handle bars. The electrics are currently located in a box mounted above the gauges on the present main fairing bracket,(fuse block and all electrics normally housed in stock headlight). This is because the headlight is fixed to the Pichler fairing.
I want to move the electrics that normally live in the stock headlight to under the fuel tank where the front master cylinder was located,(I now have handle bar mounted master cylinder). I have seen some very neat modifications where the fuse block was moved to under the seat. Under the tank there is room but I want to be sure this isn't a hair brained notion. What should I be keeping in mind as I attempt this death defying mod?

This is no job for the color blind.

Read up on doing a proper butt splice and a proper wire crimp. ;)

I'd hate to have to remove the tank for roadside trouble shooting(checking fuses)!!

that's actually easy,(to me). Far better than trying to access the headlight with room to work and easier to see. Under the seat is the next option.

I think it a good idea.

That is exactly the same as my setup and very similar to my idea of what to do about it. Cool! Have no S-fairing or mounting parts thou so I'm a bit open on what to use, but the Pichler and the box is there now. A bit tired of it as it gets a bit in the way of my legs and I must admit I find it a bit ugly...Will follow with great interest.

the thing is..the Pichler is great for long distance but the thing weighs about 25 pounds or more. I want to lighten the load on my front end and just make the bike more lean. If I replace the starter with after market starter I will lose about 10 lbs, install a new shorai battery I will lose almost 20 lbs. http://www.shoraipower.com/default.aspx a total of about 50 lbs lighter! The stock s fairing will provide the protection I want and if I do this right I can change out the fairings in about half an hour if I want to get ready for long trips. I want the best of both worlds. Electrics under the tank will be easy since I won't be moving them all that far from their original position. Doing it right, priceless.

I might also mention that I've always been irritated by the tail light. So my solution is to install a late model GS tail light so it fits neatly under the seat cowl. The new tail light is LED technology so it is very bright and uses less juice. I'm having way more fun than should be legal.

twist, it is your bike and you should experiment any way that pleases you. You are going way beyond buying after market items to attach. You are thinking out of the box a bit and doing it your way. If you find that you don't like some mod, fine, just change it again. You will become far more comfortable with the bike and learn a lot.

Do you need a speedo and/or tach? What do you actually need to ride in your style?
