starts pretty well, however hesitates greatly when I twist the throttle....bogs down....(!)

Clean that idle jet again...classic symptoms of a clogged idle circuit and the most "sensitive" circuit in the Bing carbs (the rest of the carb can be full of thirty years worth of gunk and it'll run surprisingly well...a spec of crud in the idle jet and it'll start, but off-idle will be as you describe).
