Thanks for that Randy...brings back some real good memories
While stationed in Lahr, West Germany 1967-69 with RCAF I had the good fortune to attend a number of Grand Prix races throughout Europe. One of the best was at Spa-Francochamps...1968 Grand Prix races...it was an incredible course about 14kms long I think winding through the woods and up and down hills.
Agostini on his MV Agusta blew away the field in 500cc. Phil Read and Bill Ivey duked it out in the 250cc class. Read ended up winning, That's him, I think, autographing a T-shirt in one of the pics. Another pic is of Mike (now Michelle) Duff who was nearing his end of the Grand Prix racing carreer in 1968 but still an all round excellent rider. I've met Michelle a number of times and one of his racing buddies, Kenny King (Norton Manx) was my neighbour for a few years. The tales that came from Kenny slogging back a few brewski was fascinating...they were'nt the primma donnas they are now adays. Kenny's farm was next to our old one. Think he moved to Hamilton Ontario region, rides a R1100R and at 75 he still blows us youngsters all away. Has a Norton Manx in his garage that he's never ridden since he came back from Europe in 1967! It's stunning and everyone keeps bugging him to get it out but he won't.
Michelle (Mike) Duff has written a number of books, the early ones chronicling his carrer in MC racing in Europe...which was something of a miracle for a guy coming from Canada and racing pretty imressively on the Euro scene...think he was world champon in 250cc in 1964-65(?). One of his books chronicles his sex change which was incredible in it self. Michelle (Mike) lives not too far from us and rumour has it, he still likes to let 'em rip on the back roads every one in a while. I've never seen her riding but a good frend has run into her several times and he leaves them drop jawed every time heading back to his place in the woods up near Severn Bridge, ON
