As usual Duane underestimates India and Indian industry .

Not to mention Italian "excellence and pride." A bit of race track history should quickly clarify who has had more success at the track: the ultimate measure of cutting edge technology. Italy's success in both motorcycle and automobile racing surpasses Germany at least 10 fold.

We all know that Italy has always had reliability and quality control issues, but performance and engineering? They're measuring up.

I have eagerly lined-up twice (Bimota V-DUE and RE Bullet) for a Diesel-bike and both times the Feds stopped the sales in the U.S.

Yep ,I can't wait or maybe I'll build my own .A 20hp V twin diesel in an old Enfield ...and burn biodiesel .Sounds just fine to me .

Someone has put a diesel into an older BMW and entered it into Craig Vetter's economy competition. It is doing very well so far and getting better as the owner works out the bugs.

I do wish that they were quieter, but otherwise I think that a diesel motorcycle can fill a need.

The way to quieten a diesel, say cruising home late at night, is to have a cylinder of propane fitted and bleed a small amount into the airbox .Diesel is so noisy because of the very sharp and rapid detonation ...compared to petrol. The actual exhaust noise is no more than a petrol engine.

The bleed of propane lengthens the detonation time reducing the "crack" or rattle .

My interest is the one Duane mentions, fuel efficiency. A diesel bike a friend owns gets 1.8 litre/100 km, about 130mpg US. If you ran on biodiesel which only uses a 25% fossil fuel component you would be getting 520mpg on the part you had to buy . Economical and philosophically satisfying .

Doug, my car is a 30 year old Mercedes diesel. It doesn't stink except for 20 seconds after starting, gets 32mpg US and sure doesn't sound like it's broken!

I agree, I dislike diesels intensely. Can't imagine why anyone would want a diesel motorcycle. Seems like they would be slow, heavy, underpowered, noisy, and stinky. I'd rather have a scooter if I was worried about fuel economy only!

I'll bet it stinks like noxious diesel fumes, if one is unfortunate enough to be behind it, rather than driving it.
