The only refinery in South Oz shut down a couple of years back , and since then the Oil Companies have retreated from retailing.
Our two large supermarket chains, who between them control almost 80% of the grocery business, are now trying to control the gas business too, mainly through ex Shell and Caltex stations
They offer a discount on the posted gas price on production of a supermarket docket, but my VFR wouldn't run on their junk and on the odd occasion when I am on a Interstate run and have to buy from one of their stations it always seems to take more to fill the tank.
They have pushed up the price of gas too - it is typically 15 cent a litre more than the few independents charge, and 50 cents more than it was a couple of years ago, dispute the $A's appreciation against most major currencies.
But another company, the Sahin Corporation, has realised that with these rip off's controlling and pushing up he price of gas there might be a buck to be made , and has been quietly buying up the rest of the gas stations.
Their headline stores were BP's major stations, which are refurbished including a bakery and cafe, re badged as "BP On The Run" and run as a 24 hr operation including a convenience store and cafe.
No problems there, he does a good job with them and runs a good business.
But they have been quietly buying up all the independents and other oil company stations too, to the extent that it seems that only the low volume country general stores or auto agents with a pump outside remain in independant hands.
And a good few of these seem to have recently decided to give up their pumps too.
Mr Sahin comes from the Asian Subcontinent and the first thing that he does, along with increasing the price of the gas, is replace all the existing staff with his sometimes turbaned fellow countrymen.
The end result is overpriced crap gas, sometimes with short measure, and if like me you avoid the supermarket stations it is sold to you but one of our polite, friendly, and turbaned new Australians.

In the UK the large supermarkets have big on fuel retailing for many years and they are invariably the cheapest. There was naturally some early suspicion about fuel quality but there are only a few large fuel depots around the UK and for the most part they are reckoned to supply all petrol retailers with the same fuel. Only difference being the additive package which gets put in when the fuel goes into the tanker. I think these days most people accept that supermarket fuel is fine. I use it without problems and if anything before I resolved the problem by other means the local Shell Station fuel made my engine ping more than the supermarket stuff.
We are fortunate in only having a maximum 5% ethanol ... so far. The 5% isn't mandatory it's a maximum but there is no requirement for the ethanol content to be displayed, so there has been very little public awareness or resistance to it's introduction. One of the perils of being in the "European Union" is that the bureaucrats are try to push it up to 10%. I hope the public wake up before it's too late as besides it's potential for damaging older vehicles there also seems to be absolutely zero awareness in the debate that ethanol inclusion means less energy content in the fuel. There is more than one way of being short changed.

The only time I was really short changed on fuel was at a French supermarket, somehow 26 liters of fuel in a 22 litre tank!
