I have a short story by Roger Zelazney wherein Pandora's box had been opened, and all of the evils within it released to plague mankind, except for the last and worst. When in the story it was again opened, that worst evil was released: Hope.

Actually Gizmag did have a different article about a similar machine, a trike that could fly. But I didn't post the link to it because it was ugly.
