Nuthin' worse than a small stud and loose nuts.
Chuey may have issues in this case as he has two nuts at one end of his engine stud. He won't be able to pull it tight.
This particular stud/nut configuration does work on certain motors tho'
Isn't one of the motor mount bolt longer than the other? I think I took a longer one from a spare bike and used that to mount my Brown sidestand. I really like the Brown. It folds up nicely into place and gives my bike a lot more solid support.

Well, yeah, my stud ain't long enough...but the nutz are plenty tight...
Ready rod ain't gonna do it either.
I noticed that the forward engine mounting stud does look longer ...hmmm...maybe I put the wrong one up front?...I'll measure to see...maybe a simple solution
My center stand springs are sacked so I,m using a bungy to hold it up while riding...not the most elegeant solution but simple. The Brown was on the donor bike so was going to mount it in the meantime. They are nice. Trying to find centre stand spring solution at local hardware hasn't been easy. Guess I'll just have to order from motobins. The ones from the 83RT don't work..different length. Keep yaz posted.
Measured both engine mounts on both 78 and the 83 donor...all approx 12"
So anybody out there got 13"x12mm engine mount stud??....compensation of course
Maybe check with the local cycle shop (my mates) he'sa got tons of Jap stuff out back...maybe find one that way.
Kinda liking the bungee cure for the sacked centre stand springs though....went to local Timmy's for coffee and noticed all these "pirates" mulling around the bike....I approached the biggest pirate...he just wanted to know what the hell the bike was that just blew them off a few minutes earlier...ummm...its a 35 year old BMW....then asked me what the bungee was for...I said its for passing....stored up kinetic energy ya know....we all had a good laugh
The pirates were in front of me on the way into Timmy's...in their "pirate" formation..ya know...double across about 8 cruisers and doing about 90kph...I was in my sweet spot in 4th gear just puliong about 4000 rpm...lotsa jump at that point so just pinned it and ...whoosh....it was over...I waved after I blew them off...respect ya know
For us old geezers riding geezer bikes it has become a sporting event on our weekly rides....finding the "pirates"...sneaking up on them...then....whoosh .....all over...

There should be a 8-10mm spacer between the frame and the engine block. Take out the spacer and replace it with the mounting bracket on the Brown's. Also there should have been a special bolt and nut set for the front of the Brown's mount.

Is this how they (Brown's) were intended to be mounted on 78 - 79 model frames??
I just measured the Brown at approx 10mm. Measured spacer at about 8mm. Little bench grinder and it will fit I guess.
However it looks to me that the exhaust pipe would interfere with the spring mechanism on the side stand, Also have a big rubber bumper for the centre stand in the way or at least it looks that way to me.
I do have the special nut and bolt...assume for cleance issue with lower part of engine/pan? Don't have the clamp for the bottom frame but could make one up easily....
If that's the way they were intended to be mounted on these frame design then I guess I can give it a go.
You wouldn't happen to have a pic of one mounted like that would ya??
Sorry, no pics of the alternate installation method.
My recommendation was to work around for the bolt not being long enough. I had to install one like this while waiting for the correct bolt from Munich. My apologies for not stating this is a alternate method.
The intended installation is for you to mount the brown's on the outside of the frame using the engine bolt. The front of the Brown's uses the muffler clamp, which you loosen and slide forward a bit.
The rear engine mounting bolt spec is 327mm (12 7/8") and cost about $25USD.
Here's an image of one properly installed:
Bungee cord to hold up a side stand.... not OK. Dangerous.
Going to Tim Horton.... not OK. Didn't you read Neil Grahams tirade against bad coffee in Cycle Canada?
Get yourself together man. We are supposed to be the Uber riders, gentleman on well serviced steeds who will not accept mediocrity or in Timmy's case bloody crap!

OK, after my morning coffee I can see better ...so I double check things out...
Engine mount stud on 78 is apprx 13"....
On 83 it is approx 12"....
I didn't have my facts stright in my earlier post re: measurement..dah
Longer on 78 is to allow for footpeg mounting I think...but still not long enough to allow add'l 10mm bracket width to mount the Brown ss...I coould do it by adjusting nuts on both sides but then those nuts are only hanging on by a few threads and to me that's not right....Think I need longer engine mount stud, approx 14" would do it.
Thanks for the pic. I have a Brown on my 82 RS and the clamp for forward mount is tied to the frame. Did not slide up the exhaust hanger. Was thinking of leaving exhaust hanger where it is and using custom made clamp on the frame vs sliding up exhaust hanger...I will figure this out I'm sure

Got it...the springs are pretty pooched although they kinda hold it up...bungee is security until I can get new springs...maybe tuff tie better but permanent....then I do have to carry the 2x4 for the side stand
Nope...you left coasters and coffee....
Ah but this is the "pirates" haven..."poser" parking lot ya know....we scout them out there to see what group will be the next on our list...Timmys does have its advantages
We're heading west in Sept to visit our youngest daughter in Vancouver then over to Salt Spring to visit our bestest friends and sample the "aroma" and coffee of old Ganges. Driving our friend's car out to SSI then taking the train home...should be fun...I'll keep an eye open for a super cool uber dude riding his gentleman steed as we motor on the big island up to Tofino for a few days...never been there and looks like a beautiful spot...
My friend and I hope to do some motorbike touring as well on the Island...don't know what Jim has got for a rider but...I asked if his buddies Duc might be avaialable...ha ha...ouldl be fun on that machine eh?
