How many Omegas ?

Howdy - Curious as to how many Omega ignition systems are still in use - mine's at 40,000 miles or more and still works as it did on installation. How many are still out there ? Thanks, Norm

Mine dies after 4 - 5 kms. Probably heat related, so I'm about to fit the unit up on the frame under the tank. I'm very glad I fitted a switch to flick over to points.

My red unit just fried out last month, I was just pulling out of the garage for a 1000 mile road trip....friends waiting...very frustrating. It was the pick-up, not the amplifier. I had bought a spare ( the newer version) direct from Germany when I bought a dual plug amplifier. I'm using it now, less than 10,000 miles on the last one, not too encouraging. Looking into Silent Hektik or Sachse for the future....before I get stranded . Just need to know if they are compatible with my coils or if I need to invest in those as well. Big money, but I would have been better off going that route in the first place.

The Sachse is compatable with my old brown Dyna coils. it is also compatable with the emerald isle (omega)450W alternator. Volkner Sachse will answer queries by Email, so it would be worth checking with him.

None of that has ever happened to my points ignitions The benefits of those electronic ignitions must be awesome to put up with the failures.

You have never read me recommending electronic ignition. Points do take some regular maintenance, but they are so simple and reliable. Did I mention cheap?

Right, Duane. And they ARE cheap compared to short life of electronic systems mentioned.
In another post tho, we read that using feeler gauges is a PITA.
Maybe that's because it takes a bit of skill and understanding what's going on in there.
I DID mention that I used a wire gauge to set the points.
Interestingly (or sadly?) I find that when I mention a WIRE GAUGE, I get some really BLANK looks from people I'm talking with.
Setting the pickup coils for electronic ignition also requires some care, too.
I haven't had any problems with my DYNA III but the black box is mounted on the frame just under the front of the gas tank, where cool air can blast it. (No RS or RT faring, I might add.)
I'll throw in the observation that if you have a weak battery for whatever reason, a POINTS system will still fire if the rest of the stuff is OK, and you WILL get your engine running. A lot of electronic ignitions used to cut-out at just under 10 volts, which happens easily if you happen to have a shorted cell or some other problem.
