I lived w/dual ATEs on my old R100 and I really, really like my double Brembos on the lighter, nimbler LS. I should probably just factor the cost of upgrading to dual ATEs into any /6 I consider.

Re: /6 Questions
Probably Brembos on the LS. The early R65's had [NON-pivoting] ATE's that are identical to the Brembos.SteveD wrote:Are they ate's or brembos on the LS? The earlier ones had ate's that looked like the brembo's, and behaved like them too luckily enough!godot wrote:Thanks for the replies. Great info.

Re: /6 Questions
I had the first year LS, red/white wheels and it had the ate's (brembo lookalike). I don't know which year they went to Brembo for the ls?

Re: /6 Questions
I've had my 1974 R75/6 since new. It has carried me 140,000 miles. I have dual-plugged it with Dyna III ignition, dual-disked the front with '77 forks and o 40mm calipers, put on a San Jose fork loop brace (combined with the '77 "heavy axle" and a Bob's top brace). It has always run wonderfully and, for the most part, I put the stuff on because it seemd the cool and right thing to do at the time - although the dual plugging and Dyna III ignition made it modern fuel tolerant.
I like the /6 series.

Re: /6 Questions
I've had three /6 bikes and if I were giving the advice here, I'd reccoment that you try to locate a 1976 R90/6.
For my money those are tamong the best Airheads that BMW has ever built. The 900cc engine is powerful, ecommical, very soulful and it'll run forever.
OTOH the turn signal switch sucks, as do the stock brakes. If you're willing to swap in a dual disk front end and a HB master cylinder, the bike will stop as well, as a Brembo equipped bike (Or at least mine does!) and I've updated my bike with /7 switches, which made me a much happier and safer rider.
If I was forced to choose between my /6 and my 82 R100RS? Wow... I dunno... That would be a hard one!

Re: /6 Questions
Having owned from new, a 71 R75, then a 72 R75, then from new, a 74 R90/6, then a 64 R60, not to mention another 30+ bikes, I found each airhead did a good job and gave me very good service. I rode the R90/6 for 11years only selling it when BMW wasn't supposed to be producing the big boxers anymore. That's why I bought my 84 R100S. I enjoyed them all. One feature I miss on the 74 R90, was the heavy flywheel that provided great low end power and a solid engine feel when touring. The single disc brake on the 74 seemed a big improvement over the old drums. Of course the 84 with it's dual discs and Brembo calipers, and stainless lines was a big improvement. Compared to my 06 Shitzuki braking on the R100S is just adequate. It's all relative. When set up properly, maintained, and ridden the way they want to be ridden, They are all great rides. I'm sure the brakes on the RR1000 (though automated) would make my Shitukis brakes seem adequate. Ride what ya' brung.

ZM, you are about the last person on earth who thinks that the 74 disc was better than the drum on the /5. Even the BMW literature showed it stopped in a longer distance.
Rolling backwards the disc was better.

What is needed for a dualdisc upgrade?
