BTW, I don't have a lift. the rear-main-seal job...which led into the clutch job, which finally led into changing the neutral switch was all done on the floor, on 2 sheets of cardboard. The neutral switch leak was discovered after all the other stuff was finished and after the test ride...Which is to say, BE CAREFUL when jostling the tranny into the frame. Also be sure the switch in the tranny you are putting in doesn't leak...it is an ugly job to change it with the tranny installed, but it can be done.

I knew my new transmission would be arriving today, so I got out in the garage last night to at least have everything out of the way to pull the damaged one. I got most of it done. I've yet to pull the second SA pin to drop that.
I didn't get much oil out of the drive shaft when I pulled it's drain plug. That had me a little worried.
When I pulled the drain plug on the final drive, I had plenty of fresh oil come out, though.
I reinstalled both drain plugs immediately with new crush washers.

And the UPS man came about 10 minutes before I had to leave for work!!!

Mikey does it right. Double-boxed. The transmission in a big plastic bag surrounded by wadded paper in the inside box, and the inside box surrounded by packing peanuts and air pillows in the outside box.

It's nice, but I don't expect to make it a part of my daily wardrobe. I have my 99¢ knife for that.



So I guess I have to say, when one considers the energy & materials that went into the mfg. of the knife that will (probably) never be used, it's kind of a shame. I will probably make it part of my tool roll.

Old transmission is out.
Throwout bearing & surfaces are great!
Clutch looks normal - all six fasteners in place, clutch splines look good. I'm leaving it alone.
I'm going to replace the neutral switch, as long as I have the transmission out.

But now it is bed-time...

I'd rather have a working clutch, etc...And now I've got to replace the clutch hydraulic-parts in my '96 Passat TDI.

Hi Jean - I came up with a separate logon that has no moderator power. It was Matt & Kelley's solution, rather than taking "the power" away from R65 Rob... They liked me as a moderator. But I was hearing rumblings about me over-doing it from the general public.

But that is not why I am here. I AM going to replace the neutral switch - but I was wondering if anyone had tried the brass reproduction that Hucky's sells. They are $10 less than OEM. Hans tells me the only difference is with the brass, you have to be careful not to over-tighten.

...or I could use the switch that is on the box, or use the one from my old transmission.

I'm more concerned with leaks than with connectivity.
