I don't know what a swag is, but I want to go camping with ME 109.

A billabong is essentially an old rivercourse that is no longer connected to the nearby river.
Billabongs are associated predominantly with rivers in flat country. Australia's Murray river is one such river that has an elevation of 60-70 metres above sea level, more than 1000 k's away from the sea.
This causes the rivers to meander over a wide area, over hundreds/thousands of years.
The resulting depressions that are left due to the river no longer flowing there, become rich habitat for flora and fauna.
The billabongs are usually refreshed when flooding occurs in a certain area.

The billabong's fragile habitats have been seriously threatened tho' by the introduction of jumbucks a couple hundred years ago.

Just to add further clarification, the jumbucks were stalked by the jumbuck shaggers, or swaggies, who waltzed their blanket drums (swags) all over the place, often followed closely by troopers, one, two, three.

But back in the days of the genuine swagman (as opposed to today's destitute and homeless) there would have been many a rich soul, sitting by a fire at night, looking up at the biggest show on earth, knowing where the true riches of life were to be found......Within.
No property, (mind you, some swaggies would have once worn fine woolen suits) no wives, (that would call them a husband) no taxes, no direction, no future, no concern, no food often, no cares, except for what may have been, and what will be.
