They obviously felt the pain with the introduction of the CBR in 2011. They had to up the ante. The 300 will offer ABS as well!
I have not ridden a 250 Ninja, but I understand they are two different motorcycles. The Ninja has more on top, but the Honda has a broader torque band in the middle where it counts. (to most people)
I have not done much experimenting with red-line yet.

Then there is mileage. There is this website called fuelly.com.

That could change with the new 300 as it is the first time Kawasaki has gone fuel injected on this model.

Rob - Is the low power bugging you?
I remember racing a 125GP bike, the throttle was always pinned and you went fast by not slowing down.

The low power is not bugging me... yet.
Yes, the throttle has been pegged a couple of times, but remember I am still breaking this in and I wanted to be gentle for at least the first 600 miles.

I also get scared when I am going much faster than 75mph, so I think it'll work out.

I wouldn't mind finding something like a ST1100P someday, though.

I was watching Hitchhiker's Guide for the first time just before I signed up...

I tested a CBR a few weeks back and was impressed with how effortlessly it got up to speed. It didn't feel like you needed to thrash it to keep with traffic. As long as I didn't look at the numbers on the tach it felt great, up to and over 70 with no fuss.

My only complaint was the rear suspension, it felt too stiff and non compliant. I had just gotten off my /2 conversion which has a pretty cushy ride. The old conversion felt pretty sluggish after the little CBR.
