K&N filters are...
Re: K&N filters are...
They ARE better than open-stacks as far as screening out small Children and Dogs!
On my Norton Commando I am running screened-Stacks with oiled-Microphone-Windsocks (Shure SM-58) on them as I think the filtering properties are at least as good as K&N's (plus they look better, are available in colors and are WAY!! cheaper).

YOU DON'T WASH YOUR VELOCITY STACKS?!!!!!!!!!Chuey wrote:No way they don't provide more protection than an open or even screened velocity stack. I don't think they filter as well as a stock filter but it has to be much better than nothing.
Otherwise, what comes out when you wash them? Do velocity stacks need washing?

My daughters and I ride dirtbikes, all of which are equipped with oiled-foam filters. Very little flow restriction, and excellent filtering properties (we ride in very dusty areas; the drought in the U.S. has really created dusty riding areas). We have never had issues with dirt ingestion and cylinder/piston/ring wear.
On my Suzuki GS650 (budget bike for which I paid $200), I made its air filter out of this:
Uni Filter BF1 12" X 16" X 5/8" 65-PPI Green Fine Foam
On my dirtbikes, i use this as a pre-filter: Uni Air Filter Bulk Filter Foam - Coarse Foam (40 PPI) 12"x16"x3/8"/Red
For filter oil, i use No-Toil. Oxy-clean (the laundry detergent) is a solvent for the filter oil. Filter cleaning takes all of about 3 minutes with the Oxy-clean. Let the filter sit overnight to dry; oil, and you're ready to roll.

Yes, Duane's comments are both confusing (we were talking about K&N's, which are not foam) and out of date, as many manufacturer's have provided foam filters for their dirt bikes as OE in the years since Duane had his dealership.

Rocks were still hot and soft when I had my dealership. I clearly stated that my experience was old, so may no longer apply.
I am sure that K&N had a "come to Jesus" moment and is now making really good products. Tomorrow I will check the news to read that Goldman Sachs is giving away all of their ill gotten profits to charity. The Fed is going to have an open house for the members of congress to view all of our gold.

I think the real question is, how small a particle do you need to filter? Do the minute particles that get through an oiled K&N or even a paper filter really do anything to your motor?
