I'm thinking of going to the BMW bash the first week of July at Garmisch-Partenkirchen,My question is would it be do-able on my R 65? ,the mileage is about 1160 miles one way, what kind of MPG can i expect,what kind of cruising speed can the bike handle.
I'm nearing the end of a restoration so i still haven't riding the bike so i don't know what a boxer will be like,I had a k100 but that's a different beast.

Sorry that I don't know the R65. I've ridden my R90S that far and my R100 based bikes further than that and they all did very well. I don't see why the bike wouldn't be fine for that trip. In the end, it will probably depend mostly upon the work you did to the bike.

derek, THEY ride on the OTHER side of the road. At least with a moto, it not as big a problem as with a motorcar!
In the hills here in SC, our 1980 R65 got around 54 mpg (US gal) Of course, that had a lot to do with if we had to be in traffic or a lot of highway. It would go up to 120 kph nicely but we also had a small windscreen to help, there.
It ran fine on "regular" gas which is about the same here as on the continent.
I think it is not a LEFT-LANE bike, however. Your K100 is (or was) if you still have it.

My '81 gets about 45 miles per puny U.S. gallon and will happily cruise at 90 mph if I don't get caught.

A well-maintained R65 will have no problem covering 1200 miles in two days. But, as the humble owner of a Honda horizontal single (the "Greatest Ever Motorcycle" C70 ---the better-dressed sibling of the CT90/110), an R65 is no Honda single . . . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLjnqkXNWJs

So easy in fact, you could take the long way home.
Head south thru the hills to Innsbruck and take your pick of some unbelievable roads and mountains.
