You know, I wouldn't give up on it quite yet. There's a lot of satisfaction in being a smart ass, or perhaps arse in your case. True, some of us are gifted, but I'm pretty sure it's a skill we all can develop. There are decisions to be made, of course. By nature a wise ass comment can be thought of as biting. Perhaps that's a prime reason why a lot of people choose to stay out of the game. And indeed, by nature, a wise ass comment must have a bit of bite. That's why they put hops in beer. (OK maybe not the best analogy, but you get my point.)

An important decision you will eventually have to make is style! For example justoneoftheguys and Major Softie have distinctly different styles. You can almost tell who said it without noting the signature line. And it works for them. No doubt they both take great satisfaction in a wise ass comment well placed. As do I. But my style is perhaps not so "zingy" as theirs, but it is a style. I rely a lot in planting a mental image in the victim's, uh, target's, uh, other person's mind. It doesn't have to be an image exactly. It's sufficient to cause the, uh, subject's mind to go somewhere it normally doesn't go. A place that makes them think, or at least causes a double take.

I suspect it's a bit daunting wanting to become a wise ass so late in life, Some of us started young. Most really accomplished wise asses started out in their pre-teen years. I did. In fact pre-teeners and wise ass propensities go hand in hand. But the skill can be developed. Plus, now, you have an adult brain to work with. You understand shading of meanings so much better. My earliest wise ass comments, directed mostly to my sisters because I was afraid of a parent's reaction, were more insulting than clever. But wise ass skills are tools that are sharpened by use. When you become accomplished, as so many around here are, you can temper your wise ass comments with sensitivity, as I do. But you don't have to go there if you don't want to. Many wise ass comments seem berift of sensitivity, sacrificing finesse for impact. But fear not. You can develop the sensitivity needed if you want to.

How to get started? I suggest that the smilies on the right hand side of your screen are your friend. Look at them. They are different for a reason. They are the faces of either the victim, uh, subject, or the wise as himself or herself--depending on the wise ass comment. The smilie's main usefulness, sometimes, is to allow you to put a wise ass comment out there that might look on the surface as simply insulting. But to insert a winking smilie after the comment is to assure the victim, uh, subject that you're only kidding around. Works like a charm, except when you put just a little too much bite into a wise ass comment.

And if you should decide to embrace this most satisfying skill, be assured that you are among friends. Also your guides. If they respond with a mean, nasty, or threatening statement that will be your clue that you may have gone too far on that one.

If you should decide to embark on developing your wise ass skills, and do so successfully, then you will be filled with incredible satisfaction. You will be in the position of being able to walk around in life in command. You will be able to issue a wise ass statement, or not. It is entirely up to you. You'll be a bit like the definition of a gentleman.

"A gentleman is someone who can play an accordion--and chooses not to."

You're welcome.

Ken, I think it pertinent to add that the onset of chronic smart-assnessitis is a real possibility. I've read that some folk just can't help themselves and will jump at any opportunity, anywhere, to let it rip.
That's why I personally exercise complete control like 2valve does.

So true ME 109. It is largely those out of control wise asses who give us sophisticated true wise asses a bad name. And it's understandable that almost over-sensitive people like you might choose to hold back their wise ass urgings.

I applaud your self control in this matter. But may I suggest that to a degree you may be cheating yourself and those around you? How often have you let lie some zinger pointed to some pompous jerk who desperately needed to be zinged? And how often have your mates been cheated of a laugh or of righteous satisfaction through your silence?

I would be loathe to suggest this to anybody with less sensitivity than yours. But to me you have demonstrated the wit and judgment needed to safely handle the delicate situations that may arise.

Plus, sometimes some people just really need to be zinged.
